HIV/AIDS in Ukraine

During 10 months of 2012 – 17 132 new cases of HIV infection were registered (including 3,344 children under 14 years) in Ukraine. This number translates in 56 new HIV diagnoses every day.

Mykolayiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, Donetsk and Sevastopol remain the most affected by the HIV/AIDS regions in Ukraine.

219 919 new cases of HIV-infection (36 099 of them are children) were officially registered in Ukraine commencing from 1987; 27 830 people died from AIDS, among them 321 child.

Nowadays Ukrainians are getting HIV through unprotected sex more often compare to 2008. In 2005 33% of all infected contracted HIV through sexual contacts, in 2010-2011 the number jumped to 45%.

Ukraine keeps its leadership in Europe when it comes to new cases of HIV and according to UNAIDS, more than 1% of the Ukrainian population lives with HIV. Only half knows of their diagnosis.

Each year, the number of HIV-positive people in Ukraine was increasing, but since 2005 new cases of HIV (acceleration of the epidemic) have been steadily decreasing every year: in 2005 compared with 2004 - plus 15.6%, in 2011 compared with 2010– plus 3.4%.

For the first ten months of 2012, number of new HIV cases is less compare to the same period of 2011.

Legendary musicians Elton John, the band Queen with Adam Lambert performed on the main square of Ukraine on June 30th, 2012. The concert was organized by Elena Pinchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation and dedicated to the fight against AIDS, more than 150 thousand people gathered in the official fan zone of Euro 2012. According to estimates of the city authorities more than 250,000 people came to Khreschatyk and adjacent streets. The brightest social and cultural event of Euro 2012 that was held the day before the final of championship, live broadcast was provided by TV-channels STB, Ukraine and the First National Channel, as well as radio station Radio ROKS Ukraine.

This concert continues the tradition of stellar events of 2007 and 2008, when on the Independence Square in Kiev and the Liberty Square in Kharkov, Elton John and Queen asked Ukrainians to live and protect themselves from AIDS during the live broadcast. These concerts have changed our country and influenced the behavior of many young people.

The main purpose of the concert was to remind young people about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and how to protect themselves from HIV infection. That evening 150 volunteers distributed on the square 60,000 condoms and 25,000 bracelets with a telephone of hotline for HIV/AIDS and address of the site safeconnection.org. These bracelets have been designed and developed in collaboration with the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF). Point of rapid HIV testing worked at the Independence Square where test was taken by 96 persons. The result of one test was positive.

A unique for Ukraine Twitter project was one of the most striking innovations of the evening and helped to reach more young people. During the concert, youth had the opportunity to make twits about the concert and the problem of AIDS. All twits were broadcasted in real-time on the TV-screens and on the big screen in the fan zone. This project collected 11 thousands of twits only for 5 hours! Twitter was used for the first time in Ukrainian history as a tool in the fight against AIDS.

Musicians who will take part in the concert have already come to our country with a charitable mission in order to help Ukraine in the fight against AIDS and to protect millions of people from HIV/AIDS. Collaboration of famous artists with Elena Pinchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation has a long-lasting history.
