| Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) |
 | The Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative aims to bring high quality medical care and treatment to people living with HIV/AIDS and to improve health systems in resource poor countries.
CHAI has negotiated agreements to systematically change the economics of care and treatment in the developing world. Its first agreement, concluded in October 2003, reduced the price of first-line antiretroviral drugs by one half of the world’s lowest prices. In January 2004, the CHAI reached an agreement with leading medical technology companies to reduce the price of CD4 and viral load laboratory tests by up to 80 percent for people with HIV/AIDS.
The Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative has created a consortium modeled along the lines of a “buying group”. The initial Member Purchasers include its partner countries in Africa and the Caribbean. Volumes across these Member Purchasers are consolidated, and tendering processes in each of the countries will accommodate multi-year tenders. These countries will be ordering large quantities of ARVs and diagnostics over the next several years in predictable volumes, which will provide companies with an opportunity to gain economies of scale. |
